Giant Swallowtail (Papilio cresphontes) Fermilab, Kane and DuPage Counties, Illinois August 26, 2001 This Giant Swallowtail was fluttering its wings continuously while at the thistle flowers, as many swallowtails do while nectaring, until a gust of wind pushed its wings forward for a few seconds, giving this clear view of the upperside, but odd pose. This was a rather tattered individual, with both tails missing. Photo by Tom Peterson |
