Tawny-edged Skipper

Tawny-edged Skipper Tawny-edged Skipper (Polites themistocles)
Warrenville, DuPage County, Illinois
August 24, 2008

This is one of the female "Black Witches" - Dun, Little Glassy Wing, Northern Broken Dash, Tawny-edged, and Cross Line Skippers - with pale colored postmedial spots on a dark brown dorsal wing surface. This makes it difficult to distinguish out in the field, but we will examine the photo carefully.

The characteristics that confirm this is a Tawny-edged Skipper are the obvious pale yellow opaque spots combined with the bright orange color near the costal edge.
